06-Mar-02 (Independent) Taliban connections in Bangladesh: The signs are ominous - In the midst of escalating violence and lawlessness in the country, the Taliban issue had taken a back seat... In response to questions put to her by journalists, Sheikh Hasina said that Begum Zia’s cabinet had two Taliban ministers. She certainly did not say that the people of Bangladesh are all Taliban or fundamentalist or communal...How can Begum Zia deny a fact that is there for the whole world to see? The Prime Minister deliberately distorted the facts to present a confusing picture because she certainly knows the true identity of her two Jamaat colleagues. Jamaat’s declared goals and its sympathies for the Al Qaeda are not matters for speculation; these are established facts...
